Laurie Meyer

19 Jul 2019

It is with great sadness that the Victorian Polo Association wishes to inform the polo community of the passing of Laurie Meyer.

Laurie has been a member of Yaloak since the 1990’s and has been a great contributor to the club. Laurie has held a number of positions within the Club, holding positions as President and Treasurer over many years. In the 1990’s Laurie played with our past president Richard Simpson and Laurie’s wife Meagan took on the grooming job, working horses during the day and persevering with baby Ben on her hip. Along came Jake and Abbey in quick succession and with two dogs, Samuel James and Cheeky the Meyers were regulars at Yaloak. Laurie bought a number of horses from Yaloak, one in particular will always be remembered, Jasper, a grey gelding who became a much-loved member of the Meyer family only passing away last year. Win, lose or draw Laurie always showed fair sportsmanship and fair play. He played well and became a respected player.

Before Yaloak had a club house, barbecues were held in the Old Barn on the Saturday night of tournaments. Laurie would bring his guitar and get some of the most unlikely members of the polo community singing along. How could we forget Pearly Shells being sung by Bushy! Laurie then had a break from polo due to work and family commitments but came back to the game a few years ago renting horses and playing when he could around work and family.

Laurie took his position as Yaloak Polo Club President very seriously and kept our sometimes unruly meetings in order. He then became Treasurer and was instrumental in purchasing a new and much more efficient irrigator. As treasurer Laurie was able to steer Yaloak Polo Club back into the black. Laurie was on the Yaloak handicap committee and was a fair and consistent umpire, again positions he took very seriously. Laurie was also on the VPA grounds committee and held other leadership positions within the VPA.

Laurie played in many winning teams for Yaloak, Cobram Estate and RGR Arena with his handicap being raised to a well-earned and respected 1 goal.  He was in the most successful Cobram Estate team for the whole of the 2017-18 VPA season. Laurie will always be remembered with respect and love.

We share Meagan, Ben, Jake, Abbey, Olivia and Cassie shock at the loss of a much-loved husband and father. Funeral arrangements will be advised when available.

The funeral service for Laurie will take place at Yaloak at the Old Barn on Thursday the 25thJuly at 2.30pm. (Please use the main entrance to the homestead.) 4662 Geelong- Ballan Road, Ballan

Meagan has asked that all polo players attending the funeral service please wear whites and carry a polo mallet for a guard of honour for the family.

The family will be speaking at the service, if anyone would like to share experiences they had with Laurie please write it up, bring it along and place on the notice board provided for all to share.

In lieu of flowers please place donations for HNPCC Bowel Cancer Research Foundation in the box provided.

Thank you sincerely for all your messages of condolences.
